Formed in January 2016, MusicAnswers was inspired by several incontrovertible facts: music has never been more popular, more accessible, or more valuable; billions of people around the globe rely on it to enhance their lives; overall revenue from its use has increased, exponentially; but only a tiny fraction is finding its way to the people who actually create the music and recordings. As a result, it has become unsustainable for the vast majority who choose to make it.
MusicAnswers recognizes that changes in the music business are inevitable, and embraces those that help creators reach wider audiences, increase respect for their art, and improve transparency within their business. However, MusicAnswers vigorously opposes changes that enable illegal or unauthorized use of creators’ work, allow others to unfairly benefit-whether directly or indirectly-from its use, decrease transparency in their business transactions, or diminish their right to license creators’ works through the entities they choose.
More than 4800 music creators and fans have endorsed a simple and direct Declaration of Principles and united around the core mission of educating, protecting, and advocating for music creators’ rights.
